Exercise 7, § 5

General Topology, I, 128

Let XX and YY be two non-empty topological spaces and f:X→Yf : X \to Y a surjective map. Show that ff is closed if and only if the mapping y→(f−1y)y \to (f^{-1}y) of YY into P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) is continuous when P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) carries the topology TΩ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega (resp. TΦ\mathfrak{T}_\Phi) (§ 2, Exercise 7).

Deduce that the topology induced on a quotient set X/RX/R of a non-empty topological space XX by the topology TΩ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega (resp. TΦ\mathfrak{T}_\Phi) coincides with the quotient of the topology of XX by RR if and only if RR is closed (resp. open) (cf. § 3, Exercise 16).
