Exercise 1, § 8

General Topology, I, 134

a) Let XX be a topological space. Show that the following three statements are equivalent:

(Q) If x,yx, y are any two distinct points of XX, there is a neighbourhood of xx which does not contain yy.

(Q') Every subset of XX which consists of a single point is closed in XX.

(Q'') For every x∈Xx \in X the intersection of the neighbourhoods of xx consists of the point xx alone.

A space XX is said to be accessible if it satisfies these conditions.

b) An ordered set XX with the right topology (with respect to which XX is a Kolmogoroff space [§ 1, Exercise 2]) is accessible if and only if no two distinct elements of XX are comparable, and then the right topology on XX is the discrete topology.
