Exercise 10, § 8

General Topology, I, 135

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let XX be the subspace of R\mathbf{R} which is the complement of the set of points 1/n1/n, where nn is a rational integer other than 0,10, 1 or −1-1. Let SS be the equivalence relation on XX whose equivalence classes are (i) the set {0}\{ 0 \}; (ii) the set of all non-zero integers; (iii) all sets of the form {x,1/x}\{ x, 1/x \} where x∈Xx \in X and 0<∣x∣<10 < |x| < 1.

a) Show that the relation SS on XX is neither open nor closed.

b) Show that the graph of SS is closed in X×XX \times X, but that the quotient space X/SX/S is not Hausdorff. \*
