Exercise 11, § 8

General Topology, I, 135

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let XX be a topological space. Let ZZ denote the product space RX\mathbf{R}^X, and for each x∈Xx \in X let ZxZ_x be the subset of ZZ consisting of all u∈RXu \in \mathbf{R}^X such that u(x)∈Qu(x) \in \mathbf{Q} and u(y)∉Qu(y) \notin \mathbf{Q} for all y∈Xy \in X other than xx. Let YY be the subspace of the product X×ZX \times Z which is the union of the sets {x}×Zx\{x\} \times Z_x as xx runs through XX. Show that YY is Hausdorff and that XX is homeomorphic to a quotient space of YY.
