Exercise 19, § 8

General Topology, I, 137

Let XX be a Hausdorff space which is not regular (cf. Exercise 20), and let aa be a point of XX such that there is a neighbourhood UU of aa which does not contain any closed neighbourhood of aa. Let F\mathfrak{F} be the neighbourhood filter of aa, and let Y=F∪{ω}Y = \mathfrak{F} \cup \{\omega\} be the topological space associated with the section filter of F\mathfrak{F}. Let ZZ be the set Y×XY \times X with the following topology: for any point (y,z)≠(ω,a)(y, z) \neq (\omega, a), the neighbourhoods of (y,z)(y, z) are the same as for the product topology, and the neighbourhoods of (ω,a)(\omega, a) are the sets containing sets of the form

({ω}×V)∪((Y−{ω})×X), (\{\omega\} \times V) \cup ((Y - \{\omega\}) \times X),

where VV is a neighbourhood of aa in XX. Let AA be the subset of ZZ which is the union of the sets {V}×V\{V\} \times V where V∈FV \in \mathfrak{F}. Let ff be the mapping (V,x)→x(V, x) \to x of AA into XX. Show that ff has a limit relative to AA at each point of A‾\overline{A}, but that there is no continuous mapping of A‾\overline{A} into XX which extends ff.
