Exercise 21, § 8

General Topology, I, 138

Let XX be a Hausdorff space with no isolated points, and let T0\mathfrak{T}_0 be the topology of XX. Let M\mathfrak{M} denote the set of complements of countable subsets AA of XX such that A‾\overline{A} has only a finite number of non-isolated points. Show that if T\mathfrak{T} is the topology on XX generated by the union of M\mathfrak{M} and the set of subsets which are open in T0\mathfrak{T}_0, then T∗=T0\mathfrak{T}^* = \mathfrak{T}_0 (Exercise 20) and that every sequence which converges with respect to T\mathfrak{T} has only a finite number of distinct terms (which implies that, with respect to T\mathfrak{T}, no point of XX has a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods, although XX itself may be countable and therefore every point of XX is then the intersection of a countable family of neighbourhoods of this point).
