Bourbaki

Exercise 29, § 8

General Topology, I, 141

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let RR be a Hausdorff equivalence relation on a non-empty topological space XX, and let F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) be the space of non-empty closed subsets of XX, with the topology induced by TΘ\mathfrak{T}_\Theta (Exercise 12). Show that every A∈F(X)A \in \mathfrak{F}(X) which lies in the closure of X/RX/R [considered as a subset of F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X)] is contained in some equivalence class of RR (use reductio ad absurdum).

b) Suppose in addition that XX is regular and RR is open. Show that X/RX/R is then a closed subset of F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) with respect to the topology TΘ\mathfrak{T}_\Theta (use Proposition 11 of § 7, no. 6).
