Exercise 7, § 8

General Topology, I, 135

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let XX be the interval [−1,1][ -1, 1 ] in R\mathbf{R}. Consider the following equivalence relation SS on XX: if x≠±1x \neq \pm 1, the equivalence class of xx consists of xx and −x-x; the equivalence class of 11 (resp. −1-1) consists of 11 (resp. −1-1) alone. Show that SS is open and that the quotient space X/SX/S is accessible but not Hausdorff. Show also that every point of X/SX/S has a neighbourhood in X/SX/S which is a regular subspace. \*
