Bourbaki

Exercise 13, § 9

General Topology, I, 144

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

With the notation of Exercise 13, endow F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) and K(X)\mathfrak{K}(X) with the topology induced by the topology TΘ\mathfrak{T}_\Theta on B0(X)\mathfrak{B}_0(X) (§ 8, Exercise 12).

a) Show that if XX is quasi-compact, then so is F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X). (For each open set UU in XX, let c(U)c(U) [resp. m(U)m(U)] be the set of all closed subsets MM of XX such that M⊂UM \subset U (resp. M∩U≠∅M \cap U \neq \varnothing); the c(U)c(U) and m(U)m(U) form a subbase of TΘ\mathfrak{T}_\Theta. Then use Exercise 1).

b) Suppose that XX is accessible, and let X′X' be the image of XX under the mapping x↦{x}x \mapsto \{x\} of XX into F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X). Let H\mathfrak{H} be a subspace of F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) which contains X′X'. Show that if H\mathfrak{H} is quasi-compact then so is XX. [If (Uα)(U_\alpha) is an open covering of XX, remark that if Bα\mathfrak{B}_\alpha denotes the set of all M∈F(X)M \in \mathfrak{F}(X) such that M∩Uα≠∅M \cap U_\alpha \neq \varnothing, then {Bα}\{ \mathfrak{B}_\alpha \} is an open covering of F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X)].

c) Show that if XX is locally compact, then K(X)\mathfrak{K}(X) is open in F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) (use Proposition 10 of § 7).

d) Suppose that XX is accessible. Show that K(X)\mathfrak{K}(X) is Hausdorff (resp. regular, compact, locally compact) if and only if XX is. [For the first two assertions, use Exercise 12 of § 8 and Exercise 3 of § 9; for the last two assertions, use a) and b) and Exercise 12].
