General Topology, I, 142

Let XX be a topological space and let (Gα)α∈A(G_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} be a family of graphs of equivalence relations on XX, whose index set AA is directed; let RαR_\alpha be the relation (x,y)∈Gα(x, y) \in G_\alpha and let φα\varphi_\alpha be the canonical mapping X→X/RαX \to X/R_\alpha. Suppose that the relation RβR_\beta implies RαR_\alpha if α≤β\alpha \leq \beta and let φαβ\varphi_{\alpha \beta} be the canonical mapping X/Rβ→X/RαX/R_\beta \to X/R_\alpha; then (X/Rα,φαβ)(X/R_\alpha, \varphi_{\alpha \beta}) is an inverse system of topological spaces. Let Y=lim←⁡X/RαY = \varprojlim X/R_\alpha.

(*) This example (unpublished) is due to D. Zelinsky.

a) Let g:X→Yg : X \to Y be the continuous mapping lim←⁡φα\varprojlim \varphi_\alpha. Show that g(x)g(x) is dense in YY and that, for each x∈Xx \in X, g−1‾(g(x))\overline{g^{-1}}(g(x)) is the class of xx with respect to the equivalence relation whose graph is ⋂αGα\bigcap_\alpha G_\alpha.

b) Suppose that all the RαR_\alpha are closed equivalence relations, and that for each x∈Xx \in X and each neighbourhood VV of xx there is an index α\alpha such that the class of xx with respect to RαR_\alpha is contained in VV. Show that under these conditions gg is an open mapping of XX onto g(X)g(X).

c) Show that if the classes mod RαR_\alpha are closed and quasi-compact for each α∈A\alpha \in A, then gg is surjective.
