Exercise 9, § 9

General Topology, I, 143

Let XX be an accessible space and K\mathscr{K} a set of quasi-compact closed subsets of XX, which contains all finite subsets of XX and is such that the union of any two subsets of K\mathscr{K} belongs to K\mathscr{K}. Let X′X' be a set which is the sum of XX and a set {ω}\{ \omega \} consisting of a single point. Show that there exists a quasi-compact accessible topology on X′X' which induces the given topology on XX, and which is such that the complements in X′X' of the sets of K\mathscr{K} form a fundamental system of open neighbourhoods of ω\omega. Give examples of distinct topologies on X′X' corresponding to distinct sets K\mathscr{K}.
