Exercise 1, § 4

General Topology, II, 209

Let H\mathfrak{H} be an open covering of a compact space XX. Show that there is an entourage VV of the uniformity of XX such that, for each x∈Xx \in X, V(x)V(x) is contained in a set belonging to H\mathfrak{H} [remark that for each x∈Xx \in X there is an entourage WxW_x such that W˙x(x)\dot{W}_x(x) is contained in a set of H\mathfrak{H}, and cover XX by a finite number of sets Wx(x)W_x(x)].
