Exercise 13, § 4

General Topology, II, 212

Let XX be a locally compact space and UU an open subset of XX. Let BB be the union of UU and the relatively compact components of CUCU. Show that BB is open and is the union of UU and those subsets of CUCU which are both open and compact in CUCU. (Embed XX in its one-point compactification X′=X∪{ω}X' = X \cup \{ \omega \}, observe that in X′−UX' - U the component of ω\omega is {ω}∪CB\{ \omega \} \cup CB, and use Proposition 6 of no. 4).
