Exercise 16, § 4

General Topology, II, 213

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a connected compact space and let A,BA, B be two disjoint non-empty closed subsets of XX. Show that there is a component of C(A∪B)C(A \cup B) whose closure meets both AA and BB. (Let UU be an entourage of the uniformity of XX such that U^(A)∩U^(B)=∅\hat{U}(A) \cap \hat{U}(B) = \varnothing. Show first that the set MU\mathfrak{M}_U of components of C(U(A)∪U(B))C(U(A) \cup U(B)) which meet both U(A)U(A) and U(B)‾\overline{U(B)} is not empty, by proving that for each symmetric entourage W⊂UW \subset U there exist x∈U(A)x \in U(A) and y∈U(B)y \in U(B) and a WW-chain which joins xx to yy and all of whose points other than xx and yy belong to C(U(A)∪U(B))C(U(A) \cup U(B)), and then applying Exercise 15. For each entourage V⊂UV \subset U, show that every K∈MVK \in \mathfrak{M}_V contains a set H∈MUH \in \mathfrak{M}_U, and that the set MU,V\mathfrak{M}_{U,V} of sets H∈MUH \in \mathfrak{M}_U which are contained in a set K∈MVK \in \mathfrak{M}_V is closed in F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X); and conclude that as VV runs through the set of entourages contained in UU, the intersection of the sets MU,V\mathfrak{M}_{U,V} is not empty).
