Exercise 17, § 4

General Topology, II, 213

Let XX be a connected locally compact space. Let KK be any non-empty compact subset of XX distinct from XX. Show that every component of KK meets the frontier of KK in XX (use the Corollary to Proposition 6 of no. 4). Deduce that if AA is any non-empty relatively compact open subset of XX distinct from XX, then the closure of every component of AA meets CACA.
