Exercise 19, § 4
General Topology, II, 214
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
A compact connected space is said to be irreducible between two of its points if there is no compact connected subset of other than itself which contains both and .
a) If and are two distinct points of a compact connected space , show that has a compact connected subspace which is irreducible between and (use Exercise 14 and Zorn’s Lemma).
b) Show that a compact connected space having at least two points cannot be irreducible between every pair of its points (use Exercise 17).
c) Let be a compact connected space, and suppose that there is a point which has a connected closed neighbourhood . If and are any two points of , show that there is a compact connected subset of which contains and one of the points but not the other (use Exercise 17). Under the same hypotheses, show that if are any three distinct points of , then cannot be simultaneously irreducible between and , between and , and between and .
