Exercise 20, § 4

General Topology, II, 214

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a compact connected space and let LL be the set of all points of XX which have a fundamental system of connected neighbourhoods. The points of S=CLS = CL are called the singular points of XX. The points of the interior L˙\dot{L} of LL, and the components of Sˉ\bar{S} are called the prime constituents of XX.

a) Let A≠XA \neq X be a non-empty open subset of XX, let KK be a component of A‾\overline{A} and let FF be the closure of A‾∩CK\overline{A} \cap CK. Show that if A∩K∩FA \cap K \cap F is not empty then all its points are singular. If x∈A∩F∩Kx \in A \cap F \cap K, the component QQ of xx in FF meets CACA [consider a point of CKCK contained in V(x)V(x) and its component in A‾\overline{A}, and show by using Exercise 17 that the set of points of FF which can be joined to xx by a VV-chain in FF meets CACA]. Deduce that the prime constituent PP which contains xx meets CACA (remark that PP contains the component of xx in Q∩AQ \cap A, and use Exercise 17 applied to the compact connected space QQ and the open subset Q∩AQ \cap A of QQ).

b) Deduce from a) that if PP is a prime constituent of XX and UU is a neighbourhood of PP, then PP has a connected neighbourhood contained in UU (by reductio ad absurdum).

c) Let VV be a symmetric entourage of XX, and let V′V' denote the set of pairs (x,y)(x, y) of points of XX which can be joined by a VV-chain, all of whose points are singular, except perhaps for xx and yy. As VV runs through the symmetric entourages of X, the corresponding sets V' form a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity (in general not Hausdorff) on X. Let X' be the associated Hausdorff space, and show that the inverse images of the points of X' under the canonical mapping X → X' are the prime constituents of X. The (compact connected) space X' is called the space of prime constituents of X. Show that X' is locally connected [use b) and Chapter I, § 10, no. 4, Proposition 8].

d) Let (rn) be the sequence of all the rational numbers contained in ]0,1[, arranged in some order. For each irrational x ∈ [0,1], let

f(x)=∑n2−nsin⁡1/(x−rn). f(x) = \sum_n 2^{-n} \sin 1/(x - r_n).

Let X be the closure in R2\mathbf{R}^2 of the graph of f. Show that X is connected and irreducible between its points with abscissas 0 and 1, but that X has only one prime constituent.*
