A subset AA of a uniform space XX is said to be bounded if for each entourage VV of XX there is a finite set FF and an integer n>0n > 0 such that A⊂nV(F)A \subset^n V(F).

a) The union of two bounded subsets is bounded. The closure of a bounded subset is bounded. Every precompact subset is bounded.

b) If f:X→Yf : X \to Y is uniformly continuous, then the image under ff of every bounded subset of XX is a bounded subset of YY.

c) In a product of non-empty uniform spaces, a set is bounded if and only if each of its projections is bounded.

d) For each symmetric entourage VV of XX, let RVR_V denote the union of the sets VnV^n as nn runs through the integers >0> 0. Show that RVR_V is both open and closed in X×XX \times X and that, in the notation of no. 4,

RV(x)=Ax,V R_V(x) = A_{x, V}

for each x∈Xx \in X. Suppose that RV=X×XR_V = X \times X for each symmetric entourage VV of XX (this will be the case in particular if XX is connected); show that a set A⊂XA \subset X is bounded if and only if, for each symmetric entourage VV of XX and each x0∈Xx_0 \in X, there is an integer n>0n > 0 such that A⊂nV(x0)A \subset^n V(x_0).
