Exercise 4, § 1

General Topology, III, 297

A paratopological group is a group GG endowed with a topology satisfying axiom (GT1)(∗)(\mathrm{GT}_1) (*).

a) A filter B\mathfrak{B} on a group GG is the neighbourhood filter of ee for a topology which makes GG a paratopological group if and only if B\mathfrak{B} satisfies axioms (GV1)(\mathrm{GV}_1) and (GVIII)(\mathrm{GV}_{\mathrm{III}}) and e∈Ve \in V for all V∈BV \in \mathfrak{B}. The corresponding topology is then unique; it is Hausdorff if and only if the intersection of the sets V.V−1V.V^{-1}, where VV runs through B\mathfrak{B}, consists of the point ee alone.

b) On the group Z\mathbf{Z} of integers, let VnV_n be the set consisting of 00 and all integers m≥nm \geq n, for each n>0n > 0. Show that the VnV_n form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00 for a non-Hausdorff topology on Z\mathbf{Z}, and that with this topology Z\mathbf{Z} is a paratopological group in which {0}\{0\} is closed.

c) A paratopological group GG is a topological group if and only if, for each subset AA of G‾\overline{G}, the intersection of the sets AVAV (or of the sets VAVA) is the closure A‾\overline{A} of AA (as VV runs through the neighbourhood filter of ee) (to see that the condition is sufficient, take AA to be the complement of an open neighbourhood of ee).
