Exercise 7, § 1

General Topology, III, 298

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let φ\varphi be the canonical mapping of R\mathbf{R} onto T=R/ZT = \mathbf{R}/\mathbf{Z}, and let ff be the mapping x→φ(3x)x \to \varphi(3x), restricted to the neighbourhood V=[−1/8,+1/8]V = [-1/8, +1/8] of 00 in R\mathbf{R}. Show that ff is a homeomorphism of VV onto f(V)f(V) and satisfies condition 1) of Definition 2 of no. 3, but is not a local isomorphism from R\mathbf{R} to TT. \*
