Exercise 10, § 2

General Topology, III, 300

Let GG be a quasi-topological group in which every subset consisting of a single point is closed and whose identity component CC is such that G/CG/C is finite. Show that if G/CG/C has kk elements, then the set of conjugates xax−1xax^{-1} of an element a∈Ga \in G is either infinite or else has at most kk elements (consider the mapping x→xax−1x \to xax^{-1} of GG onto this set). In particular, if GG is connected, the set of conjugates of every element not in the centre of GG is infinite.
