Exercise 17, § 2

General Topology, III, 301

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let GG be the additive group of mappings n→f(n)n \to f(n) of N\mathbf{N} into Q\mathbf{Q} such that lim⁡n→∞f(n)\lim_{n \to \infty} f(n) exists in R\mathbf{R}. For each α>0\alpha > 0, let VαV_\alpha be the set of f∈Gf \in G such that ∣f(n)∣<α|f(n)| < \alpha for all n∈Nn \in \mathbf{N}. Show that the VαV_\alpha satisfy axioms (GV_I) and (GV_{II}) and that with the topology defined by the VαV_\alpha, the group GG is Hausdorff and totally disconnected. Let HH be the subgroup of all f∈Gf \in G such that lim⁡n→∞f(n)=0\lim_{n \to \infty} f(n) = 0. Show that HH is closed and that G/HG/H is isomorphic to R\mathbf{R} and therefore connected. \*
