Exercise 2, § 2

General Topology, III, 298

a) Extend Propositions 1, 2 and 4 to semi-topological groups (§ 1, Exercise 2). (To prove that the closure H‾\overline{H} of a subgroup HH is a subgroup start by remarking that SH⊂H‾SH \subset \overline{H} for all s∈Hs \in H).

b) Let GG be the group Z(N)\mathbf{Z}^{(\mathbf{N})}, and let eie_i (i∈Ni \in \mathbf{N}) be the element of GG all of whose coordinates are zero except the iith, and whose iith coordinate is 1. For each n∈Nn \in \mathbf{N}, let VnV_n be the set of all z=(zk)∈Gz = (z_k) \in G such that z=0z = 0 for k≤nk \leq n and zk≥0z_k \geq 0 for k>nk > n. The VnV_n form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00 for a topology which makes GG into a Hausdorff paratopological group. Let HH be the subgroup of GG generated by the elements e0+en (n≥1)e_0 + e_n \ (n \geq 1) Show that HH is discrete but not closed in GG, and that H‾\overline{H} is not a subgroup of GG.
