Exercise 21, § 2

General Topology, III, 302

Let GG be a topological group and let H,KH, K be two subgroups of GG such that G=HKG = HK and H∩K={e}H \cap K = \{e\}. Each x∈Gx \in G can be written uniquely in the form x=f(x)g(x)x = f(x)g(x), where f(x)∈Hf(x) \in H and g(x)∈Kg(x) \in K. The mapping (y,z)↦yz(y, z) \mapsto yz of H×KH \times K onto GG is a homeomorphism if and only if one of the mappings f,gf, g is continuous. Show that this condition is always satisfied if one of the subgroups H,KH, K is compact and closed, and the other is closed (remark that if HH and KK are closed, ff and gg can have no cluster point other than ee when xx tends to ee in GG).
