General Topology, III, 303

Let (Gi)i∈I(G_i)_{i \in I} be a family of topological groups, and for each i∈Ii \in I let KiK_i be an open normal subgroup of GiG_i. Let B\mathfrak{B} denote the neighbourhood filter of the identity element in the product topological group K=∏i∈IKiK = \prod_{i \in I} K_i. Show that in the product group G=∏i∈IGiG = \prod_{i \in I} G_i, B\mathfrak{B} is a base of the neighbourhood filter of ee for a topology compatible with the group structure of GG. The group GG, endowed with this topology, is called the local product of the GiG_i (relative to the KiK_i); KK is then an open normal subgroup of GG, and G/KG/K is isomorphic to the (discrete) product of the groups Gi/KiG_i/K_i. If, for each i∈Ii \in I, Ki′K'_i is another open normal subgroup of GiG_i, then the local product topologies on GG, defined by the families (Ki)(K_i) and (Ki′)(K'_i), coincide if and only if Ki′=KiK'_i = K_i for all but a finite number of indices.

For each x∈Ix \in I, let Gk′G'_k be the normal subgroup of GG consisting of all x=(xi)x = (x_i) such that xi=eix_i = e_i whenever i≠xi \neq x. Then Gx′G'_x, with the topology induced by a local product topology on GG, is canonically isomorphic to GxG_x. The closure in GG of the subgroup generated by the Gi′G'_i is the normal subgroup G0G_0 of GG which consists of all x=(xi)x = (x_i) such that xi∈Kix_i \in K_i for all but a finite number of indices. G0G_0 is said to be the local direct product of the GiG_i (relative to the K′K'); G0/KG_0/K is then a discrete group isomorphic to the direct product of the Gi/KiG_i/K_i.
