Exercise 29, § 2

General Topology, III, 305

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let GG be the topological group R\mathbf{R}, let φ\varphi be the canonical mapping of R\mathbf{R} onto its quotient group T=R/ZT = \mathbf{R}/\mathbf{Z}, and let θ\theta be an irrational number. The group GG operates continuously on E=T2E = T^2 by the rule (s,(x,y))→(x+φ(s),y+φ(θs))(s, (x, y)) \to (x + \varphi(s), y + \varphi(\theta s)). Show that the stabilizer of each z∈Ez \in E consists of 00 alone, that the orbit of zz is dense in EE and that it is not a topological homogeneous space relative to GG.*
