General Topology, III, 305

A topological group GG is said to have no arbitrarily small subgroups if there is a neighbourhood VV of ee in GG such that {e}\{e\} is the only subgroup of GG contained in VV.

aa Let GG be a topological group, HH a normal subgroup of GG. Show that if HH and G/HG/H have no arbitrarily small subgroups, then neither does GG.

bb Deduce from aa that if H1,H1H_1, H_1 are two normal subgroups of a topological group GG such that G/H1G/H_1 and G/H2G/H_2 have no arbitrarily small subgroups, then neither does G/(H1∩H2)G/(H_1 \cap H_2).
