Exercise 1, § 4

General Topology, III, 308

a) A subgroup HH of a topological group GG operates properly on GG according to the external law (s,x)→sxs−1(s, x) \to sxs^{-1} if and only if GG is Hausdorff and HH is compact (use Propositions 2 and 4).

b) Let GG be a topological group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. Then the mapping (x,y)→xy(x, y) \to xy of H×GH \times G into GG is proper if and only if HH is quasi-compact (consider the inverse image of ee under this mapping).
