Bourbaki

Exercise 21, § 4

General Topology, III, 313

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let M be a compact space endowed with a semigroup structure such that (i) the mapping (x,y)→xy(x, y) \to xy of M×MM \times M into MM is continuous; (ii) for each a∈Ma \in M the relation ax=ayax = ay implies x=yx = y.

a) Show that if F is a closed subset of M and x∈Mx \in M is such that xF⊂FxF \subset F, then xF=FxF = F. [Let yy be a cluster point of the sequence (xn)n≥1(x^n)_{n \geq 1} in M; show that yF=⋂n≥1xnFyF = \bigcap_{n \geq 1} x^n F, and deduce that yxF=yFyx F = yF].

b) Deduce from a) that if, in addition, for each a∈Ma \in M the relation xa=yaxa = ya implies x=yx = y, then M is a compact topological group. (Start by showing that there is an identity element e; to show that x→x−1x \to x^{-1} is continuous, argue by reductio ad absurdum, considering an ultrafilter on M which converges to e).
