Exercise 23, § 4

General Topology, III, 313

Let pp be a prime number, let (Gn)(G_n) be an infinite sequence of topological groups each identical with the discrete group Z/(p2)\mathbf{Z}/(p^2), and let HnH_n be the subgroup (p)/(p2)(p)/(p^2) of GnG_n. Let GG be the local direct product of the GnG_n relative to the HnH_n (§ 2, Exercise 26); then GG is a locally compact group but is not compact. Show that the continuous homomorphism u:x→pxu : x \to px of GG into itself is not a strict morphism of GG onto u(G)u(G), and that u(G)u(G) is not closed in GG.
