Exercise 6, § 4

General Topology, III, 308

It is set in small type as supplementary.

For each real number a⩾1a \geqslant 1, put

fa(t)=(t+a(a+2)a+1,−aa+1)ift<−aa+1, f_a(t) = \left( t + \frac{a(a+2)}{a+1}, -\frac{a}{a+1} \right) \quad \text{if} \quad t < -\frac{a}{a+1},
fa(t)=(a,t)if−aa+1≤t≤aa+1, f_a(t) = (a, t) \qquad \text{if} \qquad -\frac{a}{a+1} \leq t \leq \frac{a}{a+1},
fa(t)=(−t+a(a+2)a+1,aa+1)ift>aa+1. f_a(t) = \left( -t + \frac{a(a+2)}{a+1}, \frac{a}{a+1} \right) \quad \text{if} \quad t > \frac{a}{a+1}.

Let CaC_a denote the set of all points fa(t)f_a(t) as tt runs through R\mathbf{R}, and let X⊂R2X \subset \mathbf{R}^2 be the union of the sets CaC_a for a⩾1a \geqslant 1 and the lines D′D' and D′′D'', where D′D' (resp. D′′D'') is the set of points (t,−1)(t, -1) (resp. (t,1)(t, 1)) for t∈Rt \in \mathbf{R}.

a) The group R\mathbf{R} operates on XX according to the law (s,z)→s.z(s, z) \to s.z such that:

(i) s.(t,−1)=(s+t,−1)s.(t, -1) = (s+t, -1); (ii) s.(t,1)=(t−s,1)s.(t, 1) = (t-s, 1); (iii) s.fa(t)=fa(s+t)s.f_a(t) = f_a(s+t) for a⩾1a \geqslant 1.

Show that R\mathbf{R} operates continuously on XX and that the four conditions of Proposition 4 are satisfied, but that X/RX/\mathbf{R} is not Hausdorff.

b) Let SS be the equivalence relation on XX whose classes consist of a single point zz if z∉D′∪D′′z \notin D' \cup D'', and are of the form (z,−z)(z, -z) if z∈D′z \in D' or z∈D′′z \in D''. Let X′X' be the quotient space X/SX/S. The relation SS is compatible with the group R\mathbf{R} operating on XX (§\S 2, no. 4); show that R\mathbf{R} operates continuously on X′X', that the four conditions of Proposition 4 are satisfied and that X′/RX'/\mathbf{R} is Hausdorff, but that R\mathbf{R} does not operate properly on X′X'.*
