Exercise 9, § 4

General Topology, III, 309

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a topological group operating continuously on two spaces XX and X′X', and let f:X→X′f : X \to X' be a continuous mapping compatible with the identity mapping of GG (§\S 2, no. 4). Let fˉ:X/G→X′/G\bar{f} : X/G \to X'/G be the continuous mapping induced by ff on the quotient spaces.

a) Show that if ff is open (resp. closed, proper, injective, surjective) then so is fˉ\bar{f}. (To prove that if ff is proper then fˉ\bar{f} is proper, show that the inverse image of a point of X′/GX'/G under fˉ\bar{f} is quasi-compact.)

b) Suppose that GG acts properly and freely on both XX and X′X'. Show that if fˉ\bar{f} is proper, then so is ff [observe that the restriction of ff to an orbit G.xG.x is a homeomorphism onto G.f(x)G.f(x)].
