Exercise 6, § 5

General Topology, III

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let σ\sigma be a permutation of N\mathbf{N} and let φ(n)\varphi(n) be the smallest number of intervals of N\mathbf{N} whose union is σ([0,n])\sigma([0, n]). Suppose that φ(n)\varphi(n) is bounded as nn runs through N\mathbf{N}. Then if (un)(u_n) is any convergent series whose terms belong to a Hausdorff commutative group GG, the series (uσ(n))(u_{\sigma(n)}) is convergent and has the same sum as (un)(u_n).

\* b) Suppose that φ(n)\varphi(n) is not bounded in N\mathbf{N}. Construct a series (un)(u_n) whose terms belong to the additive group R\mathbf{R} and which converges in R\mathbf{R} but is such that the series (uσ(n))(u_{\sigma(n)}) does not converge. [Consider a strictly increasing sequence (mk)(m_k) of integers, defined by induction on kk, satisfying the following conditions : (i) if [0,nk][0, n_k] is the largest interval of N\mathbf{N} with left-hand extremity 00 which is contained in σ([0,mk])\sigma([0, m_k]), then

σ([0,mk])⊂[0,nk+1]; \sigma([0, m_k]) \subset [0, n_{k+1}];

(ii) φ(mk)≥k+1\varphi(m_k) \geq k + 1. Then define unu_n appropriately for nk<n<nk+1n_k < n < n_{k+1}. Generalize to the case of a complete Hausdorff commutative group GG which is generated by every neighbourhood of 00. \*
