Let (Xα,fαβ)(X_\alpha, f_{\alpha\beta}) be an inverse system of non-empty sets such that lim←⁡Xα=∅\varprojlim X_\alpha = \emptyset. Let GαG_\alpha denote the free Z\mathbf{Z}-module of formal linear combinations of elements of XαX_\alpha, with coefficients in Z\mathbf{Z}, and let gαβg_{\alpha\beta} denote the homomorphism Gβ→GαG_\beta \to G_\alpha which agrees with fαβf_{\alpha\beta} on XβX_\beta. Show that the group G=lim←⁡GαG = \varprojlim G_\alpha consists of the identity element alone. [Argue by contradiction: if z=(zα)z = (z_\alpha) is an element of lim←⁡Gα\varprojlim G_\alpha, consider, for each α\alpha, the finite set FαF_\alpha of elements of XαX_\alpha whose coefficient in zαz_\alpha is not zero, and observe that fαβ(Fβ)=Fαf_{\alpha\beta}(F_\beta) = F_\alpha.] Hence construct an example of an inverse system (Gα,gαβ)(G_\alpha, g_{\alpha\beta}) of groups such that the gαβg_{\alpha\beta} are surjective, the GαG_\alpha are infinite and lim←⁡Gα\varprojlim G_\alpha consists only of the identity element.
