Exercise 16, § 2

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a connected Hausdorff space which is completely irreducible between two distinct points aa and bb, that is to say such that there is no connected subset of XX other than XX itself which contains both aa and bb. Show that X′=C{a,b}X' = C\{a, b\} is connected and that, for each x∈X′x \in X', the complement of xx in XX has exactly two components A(x)A(x) and B(x)B(x) such that a∈A(x),b∈B(x),a∉B(x),b∉A(x)a \in A(x), b \in B(x), a \notin B(x), b \notin A(x). [Show that C{x}C\{x\} cannot be partitioned into three non-empty open sets, by using Exercise 4 a) of Chapter I, § 11.] Deduce that there exists a linear ordering on XX which is compatible with the topology of XX (use Exercise 15).
