Exercise 17, § 2

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a connected Hausdorff space such that whenever XX is covered by three non-empty connected sets distinct from XX, there are two of these sets whose union is distinct from XX

a) Show that, for every point x∈Xx \in X, C{x}C\{x\} has at most two components (same method as in Exercise 16).

b) Show that there are at most two points of XX whose complements are connected. Moreover, if there are two distinct points a,ba, b with this property, show that, for each xx other than aa or bb, aa and bb belong to different components of C{x}C\{x\}.

c) Deduce from a) and b) that there is a linear ordering on XX compatible with the topology of XX (use Exercise 15).
