Exercise 18, § 2

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a compact, connected, locally connected space which is irreducible between two of its points a,ba, b (Chapter II, § 4, Exercise 19). Let xx be a point of XX other than aa or bb. Show that C{x}C\{x\} has exactly two components and that aa and bb belong to different components of C{x}C\{x\}. [Arguing as in Exercise 16, show first that C{x}C\{x\} cannot have more than two components. Next, if VV is any connected closed neighbourhood of xx which contains neither aa nor bb, let AV,BVA_V, B_V be the components of a,ba, b respectively in CVC_V; show that AV≠BVA_V \neq B_V by using Exercise 17 of Chapter II, § 4; finally consider the union of the sets AVA_V (resp. BVB_V) as VV runs through the set of all connected closed neighbourhoods of xx in XX.] Deduce that there exists a linear ordering on XX such that T0(X)\mathfrak{T}_0(X) is the given topology on XX [Exercises 15 and 14 c)].

b) Let XX be a compact connected space which is irreducible between two of its points a,ba, b. Show that if XX has more than one prime constituent (Chapter II, § 4, Exercise 20) then the space X′X' of prime constituents of XX (\emph{loc. cit.}) is irreducible between the prime constituents of aa and bb, and that there is a linear ordering on X′X' such that the topology of X′X' is identical with T0(X′)\mathfrak{T}_0(X'). \* Give an example in which X′X' is distinct from XX [cf. Exercise 15 d)]. \*
