Bourbaki

Exercise 7, § 2

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a non-empty linearly ordered set, endowed with the topology T0(X)\mathfrak{T}_0(X).

a) If XX is connected, show that it has the following two properties:

α) Every non-empty subset of XX which is bounded above has a least upper bound (if AA is non-empty and bounded above, and if BB is the set of upper bounds of AA, and CC the set of lower bounds of BB, show that B∪C=XB \cup C = X and that BB and CC are closed).

β) The set XX is without gaps, in other words (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 1, Exercise 18) every open interval [a,b[ (a<b)[a, b[\ (a < b) of XX is non-empty (use the argument of Theorem 4).

b) Show conversely that if XX has properties α) and β), then XX is connected. (Show first that every closed interval [a,b][a, b] is connected: assuming that this interval is the disjoint union of two non-empty closed sets AA and BB, and that a∈Aa \in A, consider the greatest lower bound of BB and hence obtain a contradiction).

c) Show that if XX is connected it is locally compact and locally connected, and that the only connected subsets of XX are the intervals (bounded or unbounded).
