Exercise 8, § 2

General Topology, IV

Let XX and YY be two linearly ordered sets, endowed with the topologies T0(X)\mathfrak{T}_0(X) and T0(Y)\mathfrak{T}_0(Y) respectively.

a) Suppose XX connected and let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a continuous mapping. Show that, for all x,yx, y in XX such that x<yx < y, every z∈Yz \in Y belonging to the closed interval with end-points f(x)f(x) and f(y)f(y) belongs to f(X)f(X) (use Exercise 7). Deduce that ff is a homeomorphism of XX onto f(X)f(X) if and only if ff is continuous and strictly monotone.

b) Give an example of a homeomorphism of the rational line QQ onto itself which is not strictly monotone.
