General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a metric space. If AA and BB are two non-empty subsets of XX, put

ρ(A,B)=sup⁡x∈Ad(x,B)andσ(A,B)=sup⁡(ρ(A,B),ρ(B,A)); \rho(A, B) = \sup_{x \in A} d(x, B) \quad \text{and} \quad \sigma(A, B) = \sup (\rho(A, B), \rho(B, A));

also put σ(∅,∅)=0,σ(∅,A)=σ(A,∅)=+∞\sigma(\emptyset, \emptyset) = 0, \sigma(\emptyset, A) = \sigma(A, \emptyset) = +\infty for any non-empty subset AA of XX. Show that σ\sigma is a pseudometric on the set P(X)\mathfrak{P}(X) of all subsets of XX, and that the uniformity defined by σ\sigma coincides with the uniformity constructed from that of XX by the procedure of Chapter II, § 1, Exercise 5.

Suppose that XX is bounded. Then σ\sigma is a metric on the set F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) of non-empty closed subsets of XX. If, moreover, XX is complete, show that F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) is a complete metric space [let Φ\Phi be a Cauchy filter on F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X); for each set X∈Φ\mathscr{X} \in \Phi, let S(X)S(\mathscr{X}) be the union of the subsets AA of XX which belong to X\mathscr{X}; show that the sets S(X)S(\mathscr{X}) form a filter base on XX as X\mathscr{X} runs through Φ\Phi, that this filter base has a non-empty set CC of cluster points, and that Φ\Phi converges to CC].
