Exercise 14, § 4

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a non-normal Hausdorff space, and let A,BA, B be two disjoint closed subsets of XX such that there is no pair of disjoint open sets U,VU, V in XX satisfying the relations A⊂UA \subset U and B⊂VB \subset V. Let RR be the equivalence relation on XX whose equivalence classes are the set AA, the set BB, and the sets {x}\{x\} where x∈C(A∪B)x \in C(A \cup B). Show that the graph of RR is closed in X×XX \times X and that the relation RR is closed, but that the quotient space X/RX/R is not Hausdorff (cf. Chapter I, § 8, no. 3, Proposition 8).
