Exercise 15, § 4

General Topology, IX

a) Let XX be a normal space and let RR be a closed equivalence relation on XX. Show that the quotient space X/RX/R is normal (use Proposition 10 of Chapter I, § 5, no. 4).

b) Let XX be a locally compact σ\sigma-compact space, and let RR be an equivalence relation on XX whose graph is closed in X×XX \times X. Show that X/RX/R is normal (cf. Chapter I, § 10, Exercise 19).

c) Let XX be the complement in R\mathbf{R} of the set of points of the form 1/n1/n, where nn is any integer except 0 or ±1\pm 1. Consider the equivalence relation RR on the metrizable space XX for which the equivalence class of each x∈Xx \in X, which is not an integer, consists of the points xx and 1/x1/x, and the equivalence class of each integer consists of that integer alone. Show that RR is open and that the graph of RR is closed in X×XX \times X, but that X/RX/R is not regular.
