Exercise 16, § 4

General Topology, IX

For each covering R\mathfrak{R} of a topological space XX, let VRV_{\mathfrak{R}} denote the union of all the sets U×UU \times U such that U∈RU \in \mathfrak{R}. A covering R\mathfrak{R} of XX is said to be even if there is a neighbourhood WW of the diagonal Δ\Delta of X×XX \times X such that the covering (W(x))x∈X(W(x))_{x \in X} is finer than R\mathfrak{R}. R\mathfrak{R} is said to be divisible if there is a neighbourhood WW of Δ\Delta in X×XX \times X such that W˙⊂VR\dot{W} \subset V_{\mathfrak{R}}.

a) Show that every even open covering of XX is divisible [cf. Exercise 19 b)].

b) Let R\mathfrak{R} be an open covering of XX such that there exists a locally finite closed covering G\mathscr{G} of XX which is finer than R\mathfrak{R}. Show that R\mathfrak{R} is even. (For every set A∈GA \in \mathscr{G}, let UAU_A be a set of R\mathfrak{R} which contains AA, and let VAV_A be the union in X×XX \times X of UA×UAU_A \times U_A and (X−A)×(X−A)(X - A) \times (X - A); consider the set W=⋂A∈GVAW = \bigcap_{A \in \mathscr{G}} V_A.)
