Exercise 17, § 4

General Topology, IX

a) If every finite open covering of a topological space XX is divisible (Exercise 16), then XX satisfies Axiom (OV′)(O'_V) (consider a binary open covering of XX, i.e., one formed by two subsets of XX). Conversely, if XX satisfies (OV′)(O'_V), then every finite open covering of XX is even [use Theorem 3 of no. 3, which is valid provided that XX satisfies (OV′)(O'_V), to reduce to the case of a binary covering, and then again to deal with this case]. As R\mathfrak{R} runs through the set of finite open coverings of XX, the sets VRV_{\mathfrak{R}} form a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity on XX, compatible with the topology of XX; this uniformity is called the "uniformity of finite open coverings".

b) Suppose that XX is normal. Show that the uniformity U\mathscr{U} of finite open coverings is the same as the coarsest uniformity U′\mathscr{U}' for which all continuous mappings of XX into [0,1][0, 1] are uniformly continuous [i.e., the uniformity induced on XX by that of its Stone-\v{C}ech compactification (§1§ 1, Exercise 7)]. [To show that U\mathscr{U} is coarser than U′\mathscr{U}', use Theorem 3 of no. 3 and Axiom (OV)(O_V) in order to construct a finite family of pseudometrics on XX of the form (x,y)→∣f(x)−f(y)∣(x, y) \to |f(x) - f(y)|, in such a way that an entourage of the uniformity defined by these pseudometrics is contained in an entourage of the uniformity U\mathscr{U}.

c) Let XX be a normal space and let βX\beta X be its Stone-\v{C}ech compactification. For each closed subset YY of XX, let Y‾\overline{Y} be the closure of YY in βX\beta X. Show that the continuous mapping of βY\beta Y into Y‾\overline{Y} which extends the identity mapping of YY (βY\beta Y being the Stone-\v{C}ech compactification of YY) is a homeomorphism [either use b) or else Theorem 2 and the universal property of βY\beta Y]. If YY and ZZ are two closed subsets of XX, show that Y∩Z‾=Y‾∩Z‾\overline{Y \cap Z} = \overline{Y} \cap \overline{Z} in βX\beta X (if x0∉Y∩Z‾x_0 \notin \overline{Y \cap Z} and x0∈Y‾x_0 \in \overline{Y}, consider a closed neighbourhood VV of x0x_0 in βX\beta X, such that V∩YV \cap Y and ZZ are disjoint closed subsets of XX).
