General Topology, IX

Let XX be a topological space which satisfies axiom (OV)(O_V).

a) Show that the relation R:{x}‾∩{y}‾≠∅R : \overline{\{x\}} \cap \overline{\{y\}} \neq \varnothing between two points x,yx, y of XX is equivalent to the relation R′:"f(x)=f(y)"R' : "f(x) = f(y)" for every real-valued continuous function ff on XX; hence show that RR is an equivalence relation on XX.

b) Show that the quotient space Y=X/RY = X/R is normal and that, if φ:X→Y\varphi : X \to Y is the canonical mapping, every continuous real-valued function ff on XX can be written in the form f=g∘φf = g \circ \varphi, where gg is a continuous real-valued function on YY.
