Exercise 22, § 4

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

A regular space XX is metrizable if and only if there exists a sequence (Bn)(\mathscr{B}_n) of locally finite families of open subsets of XX such that B=⋃nBn\mathscr{B} = \bigcup_n \mathscr{B}_n is a base of the topology of XX. [To show that the condition is necessary, use Lemma 3 of no. 5. To show that it is sufficient, show first that XX is paracompact by using Lemmas 4, 5 and 6. For each pair of integers m,nm, n and each U∈BmU \in \mathscr{B}_m, let U′U' be the union of the sets V∈BnV \in \mathscr{B}_n such that V‾⊂U\overline{V} \subset U. Show that U′‾⊂U\overline{U'} \subset U. Let fU:X→[0,1]f_U : X \to [0, 1] be a continuous mapping which is equal to 0 on X−UX - U and to 1 on U′U', and let

dmn(x,y)=∑U∈Bm∣fU(x)−fU(y)∣; d_{mn}(x, y) = \sum_{U \in \mathscr{B}_m} |f_U(x) - f_U(y)|;
show that the pseudometrics dmnd_{mn} define the topology of XX. ("Theorem of Nagata-Smirnov.") In particular, every regular space with a countable base is metrizable.
