Exercise 29, § 4
General Topology, IX
Let be a Hausdorff topological space. Then is normal if and only if, for each closed subset of and each real-valued function defined on and continuous with respect to the induced topology, there exists a continuous pseudometric on with respect to which is uniformly continuous. (To show that the condition is sufficient, show that every real-valued function defined on a closed subset , and continuous with respect to the induced topology, can be extended to a continuous function on ; for this, consider the Hausdorff space associated with the uniformity defined on by the pseudometric .)
