Exercise 30, § 4

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a normal space and let gg (resp. ff) be an upper (resp. lower) semi-continuous function on XX, such that g≤fg \leq f. Show that there is a continuous real-valued function hh on XX such that g≤h≤fg \leq h \leq f. [Reduce to the case where ff and gg take their values in [0,1][0, 1]. For each dyadic number r∈[0,1]r \in [0, 1], let F(r)F(r) [resp. G(r)G(r)] be the set of all x∈Xx \in X such that f(x)≤rf(x) \leq r (resp. g(x)<rg(x) < r). Define by induction a family of open sets U(r)U(r) (where rr runs through the set of dyadic numbers contained in [0,1][0, 1]) such that when r<r′r < r' we have F(r)⊂U(r′)F(r) \subset U(r'), U(r)‾⊂U(r′)\overline{U(r)} \subset U(r') and U(r)‾⊂G(r′)\overline{U(r)} \subset G(r'), by imitating the proof of Theorem 1 of no. 1; then complete the proof as in Theorem 1.]
