Exercise 6, § 4

General Topology, IX

Show that, in a normal space XX, every subspace YY of XX which is a countable union of closed sets is normal. [Let A,BA, B be two disjoint closed subsets of YY, and suppose that YY is the union of an ascending sequence (Yn)(Y_n) of closed subsets of XX. Define by induction two sequences (Un),(Vn)(U_n), (V_n) of open subsets of XX such that: (i) Un∩YnU_n \cap Y_n and Vn∩YnV_n \cap Y_n do not intersect; (ii) Un∩YnU_n \cap Y_n contains A∩YnA \cap Y_n and all the sets Ui∩YiU_i \cap Y_i for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n; and Vn∩YnV_n \cap Y_n contains B∩YnB \cap Y_n and all Vi∩Yi,1≤i≤n.V_i \cap Y_i, 1 \leq i \leq n.]
