Exercise 6, § 3

General Topology, V

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a topological group which satisfies the following conditions: (LR_I) GG is Hausdorff and locally connected.

(LR_{II}) There exists a connected neighbourhood UU of the identity element ee of GG such that the complement of ee in UU is not connected. Show that, under these conditions, GG is locally isomorphic to R\mathbf{R}. [Prove first that if VV is any connected neighbourhood of ee in GG contained in UU, then V∩C{e}V \cap C\{e\} is not connected, that ee lies in the closure of every component of V∩C{e}V \cap C\{e\}, and that V∩C{e}V \cap C\{e\} has exactly two components, by reasoning as in Exercise 4. Then take the connected neighbourhood VV sufficiently small and define a linear ordering on VV such that C0(V)\mathscr{C}_0(V) is coarser than the topology induced on VV by the topology of GG, and such that Proposition 2 of § 2 applies to the set EE of elements ≥e\geq e of VV.]
